Painting Experience

Bud always had a desire to paint since he was a child and finally at age 49, He started taking Oil painting lessons. Bud studied under Walfrido Garcia for 7 ½ years. Walfrido left for Hawaii in 1993 to continue his painting career. His paintings are in over 20 galleries in Hawaii, San Francisco, East and West Coasts.

Bud continued taking lessons from various artists for the next 2 ½ years and started teaching his grandchildren. Since He moved to Livermore in June 1997, He has been painting on his own and has painted over 180 paintings. Bud assisted the Art Therapist for 1 ½ years (now on his own since Dec. 1999), teaching oil painting at the Veteran’s Hospital and Nursing Home in Livermore.

In addition, He started teaching oil painting in his home since Sep 1998 to people who had to deal with life challenges. In 1999, He started teaching to the general public (ages 8 thur 60’s).

He has shown his work in various places in Livermore and Pleasanton. Participated in Art Shows in Pleasanton, Tracy and Livermore (awarded merit award and honorable mentions). His latest Work will be exhibited at the Art under the Oaks Show on 12 & 13th July 2003. He also has paintings exhibited at China Village, Livermore City Council Chambers and the Livermore Art Gallery. Bud has been a member of the Pleasanton and Livermore Art Associated for the last 5 years and is Vice President for the Livermore Art Associated for 2003.

Bud is convinced that anyone can paint given the opportunity, desire and positive support.

Personal Experience

Bud was born in Johnson City, Ill on March 24th, 1935. His father was a coal miner and died in a coal mining accident on Dec 21, 1941. He then moved to Chicago with his mother and sister to be by his mother’s relatives. Bud was raised in the heart of Chicago, went to St. Nicholas Grammar School and Tuley High School. Spent two years in College while playing in Bands with his Saxophone (from 15 to 21). He joined the Air Force in Jan 1956, completed Navigation training and became a 2nd Lt in Apr 1957.

He met, Mary, at a dance in Columbus, Ohio on Oct 23, 1957 and was married on Jun 21, 1958. He was stationed at Lockbourne AFB, Ohio (6 ½ yrs) Jeannie and Charles were born, Harmon AFB, Newfoundland (3 yrs) Patrick was born, Park College, MO (1 yr. BA), Castle AFB, CA (2 yrs), University of Arizona (2 yrs-MA) Joannie was born. Lockbourne AFB, Ohio (6 months, gunship training for Vietnam), Da Nang, Vietnam (7 Months) and NKP, Thailand (5 months), Langley AFB, VA ( 6 ½ years). Bud retired in Aug 1979 as a Lt/Col and spent his last 6 ½ years in Computers and Command and Control.

In Sept 1979 Bud joined Lockheed as a Systems Engineer and worked on two Programs, PLSS (5 ½ years) and MILSTAR, a communication Satellite for the last 13 ½ years. He retired in Jul 1997 and moved to Livermore, CA.

Bud and Mary have been actively volunteering at the Veteran’s Hospital and Nursing home in Livermore for the last 5 years. He had played in a Banjo Band for a year and plays Saxophone in a 16-piece practice band in Livermore for the last 4 years. He plays guitar and sings old, old songs to the Veterans at the Nursing Home. He loves gardening and taking care of his grandchildren. Mary & I have 9 grandchildren, from 19 to 1 ½ years. Bud worked as a facilitator for Attitudinal Healing for 5 years and tried to incorporate that concept with Art. He has been teaching Art for the last 5 years and loves the challenge and working with people.
